SEO for Shopify Stores: The Complete Guide

Shopify has decent built-in SEO. But decent isn't enough. Here's how to actually rank your store on Google.

Shopify SEO: What You're Working With

Shopify is one of the better e-commerce platforms for SEO out of the box. It automatically generates sitemaps, handles canonical URLs, and creates clean URL structures. But there's a lot it doesn't do for you — and most store owners never bother with the parts that matter most.

The Most Important SEO Areas for Shopify Stores

1. Product Page Optimisation

Your product pages are your most important pages. Each one needs:
  • A unique, keyword-rich title tag (not just the product name)
  • A compelling meta description (not auto-generated)
  • A proper H1 heading (usually the product name + primary keyword)
  • Alt text on every product image
  • A detailed product description (at least 300 words)
Most Shopify stores fail at this. They use the product name as the title, skip the description, and leave images without alt text.

2. Collection Pages

Collection pages (like "Women's Running Shoes" or "Natural Skincare") are SEO goldmines — but only if you optimise them. Add a keyword-rich title and meta description to every collection. Add a brief description at the top of the collection (2–3 sentences minimum) explaining what the collection contains and who it's for.

3. Blog Content

Shopify has a built-in blog. Use it. Blog content is how you rank for informational searches — "how to choose running shoes", "best natural moisturiser for dry skin" — that lead customers to your store before they're ready to buy. Publish at least 2 posts per month. Each should target a specific keyword.

4. Page Speed

Shopify stores are notorious for being slowed down by heavy themes and too many apps. Every app you install adds code to your store. Every uncompressed image slows down your pages. Check your speed at Google PageSpeed Insights. Aim for a score above 70 on mobile.

5. Technical SEO Settings

In Shopify, go to Online Store → Preferences. Make sure:
  • Your store title and meta description are filled in
  • Google Analytics is connected
  • Your sitemap has been submitted to Google Search Console

6. Image SEO

Shopify uses the image filename as the alt text if you don't set one. "IMG_4872.jpg" is not helpful. Rename your images descriptively before uploading, and fill in the alt text field for every product image.

Common Shopify SEO Mistakes

Duplicate content: Shopify creates multiple URLs for the same product when it appears in different collections. This can cause duplicate content issues. Use canonical tags (Shopify handles some of this automatically, but check). Missing blog content: Most Shopify stores have a blog that's completely empty. This is a wasted opportunity. Thin product descriptions: "Great product. Buy now." is not a product description. Google needs content to understand what your page is about. No internal linking: Link from blog posts to relevant products. Link from product pages to related products and informational content.

A Simple Shopify SEO Checklist

  • [ ] Title tag and meta description on every page
  • [ ] H1 on every page
  • [ ] Alt text on every image
  • [ ] Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
  • [ ] Page speed checked and optimised
  • [ ] At least 4 blog posts published
  • [ ] Internal links between blog posts and products

FAQ

Does Shopify do SEO automatically? Some basics, yes — sitemaps, canonical URLs, mobile-responsive themes. But the important stuff (titles, descriptions, content) is still your job. How long does Shopify SEO take to work? Technical fixes can show results in weeks. Content-driven SEO typically takes 3–6 months of consistent effort. Do I need a third-party SEO app for Shopify? Not necessarily. Shopify's built-in SEO settings cover the basics. What you need is the discipline to fill them in properly for every page.
