If you serve customers in a specific area, local SEO is your most valuable marketing channel. Here's how to get it right.

What Is Local SEO?
Local SEO is the process of optimising your online presence to attract customers from local searches — searches like "plumber near me", "coffee shop in Manchester", or "best pizza London". When someone searches for a local business, Google shows a map with three results (the "local pack") above the regular organic results. Getting into this local pack can transform your business. Why Local SEO Matters
88% of consumers who do a local search on their smartphone visit or call a store within a day. 46% of all Google searches are local. If your business serves customers in a specific area, local SEO should be your number one marketing priority — ahead of paid ads, social media, and most other channels. The Three Pillars of Local SEO
1. Google Business Profile
This is the most important factor. Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that appears in Google Maps and the local pack. To optimise it:- Claim and verify your listing (if you haven't already)
- Fill in every field completely — name, address, phone, website, hours
- Choose the right primary and secondary categories
- Upload at least 10 high-quality photos
- Write a detailed business description with your key keywords
- Collect reviews (more on this below)
- Post regular updates (weekly if possible)
2. Local Citations
A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Consistency matters — if your address is listed differently on different sites, it confuses Google. Ensure your NAP is consistent on:- Your website
- Google Business Profile
- Facebook, Instagram, and other social profiles
- Local business directories (Yelp, TripAdvisor, etc.)
- Industry-specific directories
3. Reviews
Reviews are a major local ranking factor. More reviews = higher rankings. Better reviews = higher rankings. How to get more reviews:- Ask happy customers directly (most people will leave one if you ask at the right moment)
- Send a follow-up email after a purchase with a direct link to your Google review page
- Respond to every review — positive and negative
Local SEO on Your Website
Your website also needs to signal your location to Google:- Include your city/region in your title tags and H1s
- Add your full address to your footer
- Create a dedicated Contact or Location page with your full address
- Embed a Google Map on your location page
- Use LocalBusiness schema markup (structured data)
FAQ
Do I need a physical address for local SEO? A physical address helps significantly for local pack rankings. Service-area businesses (plumbers, electricians, etc.) can hide their address and set a service area instead. How do reviews affect my ranking? Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals. Aim for at least 10 reviews with a rating above 4.0. Respond to all of them. How long does local SEO take? Faster than regular SEO. With a fully optimised Google Business Profile and consistent citations, you can see results in 1–3 months.Tags
