Google Search Console is the most valuable free SEO tool available. Here's what it tells you and how to use it.

What Is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that shows you how your website performs in Google Search. It's not about analytics (that's Google Analytics) — it's specifically about your relationship with the Google search engine.

What Can You Do with Google Search Console?

See which queries bring people to your site GSC shows you the exact keywords people type into Google before clicking to your site. This is invaluable for understanding what you're already ranking for — and what you could be ranking for better. Check your click-through rates For each keyword, you can see how many impressions (appearances in search results) you got, how many clicks, and your click-through rate. A high-impression, low-click result means your title or description needs work. Find and fix indexing issues GSC tells you if Google can't access certain pages on your site, and why. It's often the first place you'll find out about technical problems. Submit new content for indexing When you publish something new, you can ask Google to crawl it immediately rather than waiting weeks for it to be discovered naturally. See which sites link to you The Links report shows your top linking pages and the anchor text used. Useful for understanding your backlink profile. Monitor Core Web Vitals GSC shows your page experience scores — how fast your pages load, how stable the layout is, and how quickly the page becomes interactive.

How to Set Up Google Search Console

  • Go to search.google.com/search-console
  • Sign in with your Google account
  • Add your property (your website URL)
  • Verify ownership — usually by adding a small snippet of code or connecting via Google Analytics
  • Submit your sitemap (usually yoursite.com/sitemap.xml)
  • Most website platforms (Shopify, WordPress, Wix) have built-in options to verify GSC without touching code.

The Reports You Should Check Regularly

Performance — check weekly. Look for keywords where you're getting impressions but few clicks (your description probably needs improving), and keywords where your ranking has dropped. Index Coverage — check monthly. Look for pages marked as "Error" or "Excluded" and investigate why. Core Web Vitals — check monthly. Fix any pages marked as "Poor". Links — check quarterly. See who's linking to you and which pages they link to most.

    FAQ

Is Google Search Console free? Yes. Completely free. There's no paid version. How is it different from Google Analytics? Google Analytics shows you what happens on your site (traffic, conversions, behaviour). Google Search Console shows you how you appear in search results (rankings, impressions, indexing). How long until data appears? GSC starts showing data a few days after setup, but the full picture builds up over time. Give it 2–4 weeks before drawing conclusions. Do I need Google Search Console if I have an SEO tool? Yes. GSC provides data directly from Google that no third-party tool can replicate. It's the primary source of truth for your search performance.
