10 Common SEO Mistakes Small Businesses Make (And How to Fix Them)

Most small business websites have the same SEO problems. Here's the list — and what to do about it.

Why Most Small Business Websites Don't Rank

It's rarely because the business isn't good enough. It's almost always because the website has preventable, fixable SEO problems that nobody's addressed. Here are the 10 most common ones.

Mistake 1: No Title Tags or Duplicate Title Tags

Your page title is the single most important on-page SEO element. Many small business sites either leave it blank (leaving Google to auto-generate something unhelpful) or use the same title on every page. Fix: Write a unique, keyword-rich title for every page. Format: Primary Keyword | Brand Name. Under 60 characters.

Mistake 2: Missing Meta Descriptions

When Google writes your meta description for you, it pulls random text from the page — usually something out of context that doesn't compel anyone to click. Fix: Write a unique meta description for every important page. 150–160 characters. Include your keyword. Give people a reason to click.

Mistake 3: No H1 Tags (or Multiple H1 Tags)

Every page needs exactly one H1 — a clear main heading that tells Google and visitors what the page is about. Fix: Add an H1 to every page. Include your target keyword. Make sure there's only one H1 per page.

Mistake 4: Images Without Alt Text

Search engines can't see images — they read the alt text description. Missing alt text means Google can't understand what your images show. Fix: Add descriptive alt text to every image on your site. Include your keyword naturally where it makes sense.

Mistake 5: Thin Content

Pages with very little text (under 300 words) often struggle to rank. Google needs content to understand what a page is about. Fix: Expand your key pages. Add product descriptions, FAQs, how-to content, customer questions — anything that adds genuine value.

Mistake 6: No Blog Content

A website with no blog is a website that only ranks for branded searches (people who already know your name). Blog content is how you rank for the searches people make before they know you exist. Fix: Start a blog. Publish at least one post per month targeting a keyword your potential customers search for.

Mistake 7: Ignoring Mobile

Over 60% of searches are on mobile. If your site is hard to use on a phone, you're losing both visitors and rankings. Fix: Test your site on your phone. If it's hard to read, navigate, or use, your theme needs updating.

Mistake 8: Not Using Google Search Console

Most small business owners have never looked at their Google Search Console data. It's free, and it shows you exactly what's working and what isn't. Fix: Set up Google Search Console if you haven't. Check the Performance report monthly. Look for keywords where you're getting impressions but few clicks.

Mistake 9: Ignoring Page Speed

A slow site loses visitors and rankings. Most speed problems come from oversized images and too many installed apps or plugins. Fix: Run a PageSpeed Insights test. Compress your images. Remove apps you don't actively use.

Mistake 10: No Keyword Strategy

Hoping Google figures out what your site is about is not a strategy. Without intentional keyword targeting, you're writing content for nobody in particular. Fix: Do keyword research. Identify 10–20 keywords your customers actually search for. Make sure every key page on your site targets one of them.

Where to Start

If you recognise your site in several of these, start with a site audit. It'll tell you exactly which problems you have and how severe they are. Fix critical issues first, then work down the list.

FAQ

How do I know which mistakes my site has? Run an SEO audit. A good tool will flag every issue and tell you how to fix it. Do I need to fix all of these? Prioritise. Missing title tags and H1s are more damaging than thin content on a secondary page. Start with what an audit flags as critical.
