SEO for New Websites: Where to Start When You're Starting From Zero
A new website with no SEO foundation is a website that won't rank. Here's exactly what to do first.

Why New Websites Struggle with SEO
Google favours established, trusted websites. A brand new site has no history, no backlinks, and no proven track record. This doesn't mean new sites can't rank. It means they need to lay the right foundation from the start — not scramble to fix things six months later.Week 1: The Technical Foundation
Get Indexed
Submit your site to Google Search Console. Verify ownership, submit your sitemap, and request indexing of your key pages. Without this, Google may not find your site for weeks — or might index a version you don't want (like a staging site).Verify HTTPS
Your site should be served over HTTPS (the padlock icon). Most modern hosting providers set this up automatically. Check by visiting your URL and looking for the padlock.Check Your Robots.txt
Visit yoursite.com/robots.txt. Make sure it's not accidentally blocking Googlebot from important pages.Set Up Google Analytics
Install GA4 on your site. You won't have enough data to act on immediately, but starting the collection now means you'll have historical data to compare against in 3–6 months.Week 2: On-Page SEO Basics
Title Tags on Every Page
Every page needs a unique, keyword-rich title tag. Don't use the page name as the title — think about what someone would search for to find that page.Meta Descriptions
Write a compelling meta description for every key page. 150–160 characters. Include the keyword. Give people a reason to click.H1s
Every page should have exactly one H1 heading that clearly describes what the page is about.Alt Text
Add descriptive alt text to every image.Month 1: Keyword Strategy
Identify Your Target Keywords
Research 10–20 keywords your potential customers actually search for. Use Google's autocomplete, Google Keyword Planner, or a tool like Oh So SEO. Prioritise keywords with:- Clear relevance to your business
- Achievable difficulty (under 30 for a new site)
- Enough search volume to be worthwhile
Map Keywords to Pages
Assign one primary keyword to each key page on your site. Make sure the keyword is in the title tag, H1, and naturally throughout the content.Month 2–3: Content and Authority
Start a Blog
A blog is how new sites build organic traffic. Start by answering the most common questions your potential customers ask. One well-researched post per week is enough.Get Your First Backlinks
Claim your Google Business Profile. Get listed in relevant directories. Reach out to any local business associations, trade bodies, or suppliers who might link to you.Build Internal Links
As you add more pages, link between them. Every new blog post should link to at least one other page on your site. What Not to Do
Don't chase quick results. Shortcuts (bought links, keyword stuffing, thin content) can result in penalties that set you back months. Don't target competitive keywords immediately. A new site won't outrank established competitors on high-volume terms. Start with less competitive, more specific searches. Don't ignore technical issues. Slow pages, broken links, and crawl errors compound over time.FAQ
How long until a new site ranks? For low-competition keywords with good on-page optimisation, 2–4 months is realistic. Competitive terms take significantly longer. Should I build backlinks immediately? Focus on getting listed in legitimate directories (Google Business Profile, industry associations) in the first few months. Aggressive link building before you have quality content is less effective. Do I need to pay for SEO tools immediately? No. Start with Google Search Console and Analytics (both free). Add paid tools when you have enough content and traffic to make use of them.Tags
