How to Write Meta Titles That Rank and Get Clicks

The page title is the single most impactful thing you can write for SEO. Here's how to get it right.

What Is a Meta Title?

A meta title (also called a title tag) is the main headline that appears in Google search results — the blue, clickable text that represents your page. It's also shown in browser tabs and when pages are shared on social media.

Why Meta Titles Matter

The title tag is the single most important on-page SEO element. It's the clearest signal to Google about what your page is about. It also heavily influences whether someone clicks on your result. A well-written title can double your click-through rate for the same ranking position.

The Rules for a Good Meta Title

Include your primary keyword The keyword should appear in the title — ideally near the beginning. Google bolds the matching terms in search results, drawing the eye. Stay under 60 characters Google truncates titles that are too long. Aim for 50–60 characters. Every character beyond that risks being cut off with "..." Include your brand name For branded search and trust, include your brand name — usually at the end, separated by a pipe or dash. Be specific Vague titles rank poorly and get fewer clicks. "Services" tells nobody anything. "SEO Audit Tool for Small Businesses | Oh So SEO" is clear and compelling. Create urgency or value (where appropriate) Words like "Free", "Guide", "How to", "In 2025", "Step-by-Step" can improve click-through rates. Use them when they're accurate.

Common Meta Title Mistakes

Keyword stuffing: "SEO Tool | Best SEO Tool | Free SEO Tool | SEO Software" — looks spammy, reads badly, and doesn't work. Too generic: "Home Page", "Products", "Services" — tells Google and users nothing. Too long: If your title is consistently truncated in search results, rewrite it shorter. Same title on every page: Every page needs a unique title. Google explicitly calls out duplicate title tags as a problem. Missing brand name: On most pages, including your brand name builds recognition over time.

How to Add or Edit Your Meta Title

WordPress: With Yoast SEO or Rank Math installed, edit the "SEO Title" field beneath each post or page. Shopify: Edit the "Page title" field in the Search Engine Listing section at the bottom of each page, product, or collection. Wix: Pages → SEO → Page Title. Squarespace: Pages → SEO → SEO Title.

FAQ

Does the page title have to match the H1? No — and they often shouldn't. The title tag is for search results; the H1 is for visitors on your page. They can be similar, but they serve different purposes and can be optimised differently. How do I know if my titles are being truncated? In Google Search Console, go to Performance → Search Results and look at how your titles appear in the Top Pages report. Or simply Google your site and check. Can I use the same keyword in multiple page titles? With care. Having the same keyword in several pages' titles can cause cannibalisation — Google isn't sure which page to rank. Use variations and make each title distinct.
