How to Win Featured Snippets in Google Search

Featured snippets — the box at the top of Google results — can quadruple your click-through rate. Here's how to get them.

What Is a Featured Snippet?

A featured snippet is a selected search result that appears above the standard organic results, inside a special box. Google calls it "position zero" because it ranks above position one. Featured snippets typically show a brief answer to a question, pulled from a web page, with a link back to the full article.

Why Featured Snippets Matter

A featured snippet dramatically increases your visibility in search results. Even if you rank position 3 or 4 for a keyword, winning the featured snippet means your content appears at the very top of the page. Studies show featured snippets can increase click-through rates by 20–30% for the keyword. For question-based queries, the improvement can be even higher.

What Types of Featured Snippets Exist?

Paragraph snippets: A short block of text answering a specific question. Most common for "what is" and "who is" queries. List snippets: A bulleted or numbered list. Common for "how to" and "best [X]" queries. Table snippets: Data presented in a table format. Common for comparison or pricing queries. Video snippets: A clip from a YouTube video. Less common but growing.

How Google Chooses Featured Snippets

Google selects featured snippets from pages that already rank in the top 10 for a query. You can't win a featured snippet if you're on page 2. Within those results, Google looks for content that:
  • Directly and concisely answers the specific question
  • Is clearly structured (with appropriate headings)
  • Uses the format that best matches the query type (paragraph, list, table)

How to Optimise for Featured Snippets

1. Target Question Keywords

Featured snippets are most common for question-based queries: "what is", "how to", "how much does", "what are the best", "why does". Use keyword research to find question-based searches in your industry.

2. Answer the Question Directly

Put the direct answer to the question at the top of the relevant section. Don't make Google hunt through paragraphs of context to find the answer. For a "what is" snippet: a clear 2–3 sentence definition immediately after the question as a heading. For a "how to" snippet: a numbered list of steps immediately after the question.

3. Use Clear Heading Structure

The question as an H2 or H3. The answer directly below it. Google needs to understand that this section answers that specific question.

4. Match the Expected Format

If you search a keyword and the existing featured snippet is a list, structure your answer as a list. If it's a paragraph, write a paragraph. If it's a table, create a table.

5. Keep Answers Concise

For paragraph snippets, aim for 40–60 words. For list snippets, 5–8 items is typical. Google won't show your entire article in the snippet — it pulls the relevant section.

FAQ

Can I guarantee a featured snippet? No. Google decides which page to feature. You can optimise for the format and directly answer questions — but you can't guarantee selection. Does winning a featured snippet mean fewer clicks (since people get the answer without clicking)? Sometimes — for very simple queries where the snippet answers the question completely. For complex topics, the snippet typically increases clicks because it previews value and builds trust.
