Content Marketing and SEO: How to Create Content That Ranks

Content is what powers SEO. Here's how to create the kind of content that actually ranks — and builds your business.

Why Content Marketing and SEO Are Inseparable

SEO without content is just technical optimisation — necessary but not sufficient. Content without SEO is writing into a void. Together, they create a compounding asset: content that ranks brings in traffic, which builds authority, which helps new content rank faster.

The Content Types That Work Best for SEO

Not all content ranks equally. The formats Google consistently rewards are: How-to guides: "How to [do something your customer wants to do]". High intent, evergreen, highly shareable. Comparison posts: "[Product A] vs [Product B]". Captures high-intent buyers who are deciding between options. List posts: "10 best [X]", "7 ways to [Y]". High click-through rates in search results. Ultimate guides: Comprehensive, authoritative content on a broad topic. Takes time to create but ranks well and earns links. FAQ content: Answers to specific questions. Great for featured snippets and AI-generated answers. Case studies and examples: Builds trust and shows real-world application.

The Content Creation Process

1. Choose a Keyword First

Don't write and then try to find a keyword to fit. Start with a keyword that has search volume, matches your audience, and is achievable to rank for.

2. Research the Top Results

Search your target keyword and read the top 3–5 results. What do they cover? What angle do they take? Where are the gaps? Your content should be at least as comprehensive — and better on at least one dimension (more detailed, more current, more practical, better designed).

3. Create a Content Brief

Before writing, outline:
  • The target keyword
  • The intended audience
  • The key questions to answer
  • The sections to cover
  • The ideal word count range

4. Write for Humans First

SEO content is not keyword-stuffed content. Write for the reader. Use your keyword naturally. The best SEO content is content that people actually read, share, and link to.

5. Optimise On-Page Elements

After writing:
  • Title tag: include keyword, under 60 characters
  • Meta description: compelling, under 160 characters
  • H1: clear, includes keyword
  • H2s: cover the main subtopics
  • Images: alt text on all images
  • Internal links: link to and from related content

6. Update Regularly

Content that ranks tends to keep ranking if it's kept fresh. Set a reminder to review and update your top-performing posts every 6–12 months.

How Much Content Do You Need?

There's no minimum. One well-researched, thoroughly-optimised piece of content that ranks for the right keyword will do more for your business than fifty thin posts that rank for nothing. Start small. Do it well. Build from there.

FAQ

How long does it take for content to rank? New content typically takes 3–6 months to settle into stable rankings. Competitive keywords can take longer. Should I write long or short content? Long enough to fully answer the question your target keyword implies. For most informational content, 1,000–2,500 words. For simple queries, 500 words might be enough. For comprehensive guides, 3,000+. Can I repurpose content for SEO? Yes. Turn a blog post into a video, a series of social posts, or an email newsletter. But make sure the SEO-optimised version (the blog post) is the original source.
